Now, the stressful situation does not have to be a major emergency but instead might be something little. A stressful situation may be rush hour traffic or paying bills or making a household budget or talking with an employer. There are many stressful situations that each of us deals with on a daily basis. If an individual reaches for a higher level of emotional competency then that individual will ultimately be able to handle stress better and make more effective decisions. People make decisions based on their current thoughts, feelings and emotions. It is our emotions that dictate what job offer we accept or where we want to live or who we choose to marry. These are all very important decisions that are made. This is why it is so important for an individual to understand his or her own personal thoughts and feelings. The more an individual understands their emotions the better the individual will be at steering their life in a positive way. Many times an individual does not understand what motivates them. The answer is simple: an individual's personal emotions. There are several components of emotional competency. Once an individual possesses these components and has developed the needed skills then that individual will reach a higher plane of emotional competency. This is very important for growth and self-development in life. One component of emotional competency is accurate self-assessment. An accurate self-assessment is the "competency in knowing your inner resources, limits and abilities". An accurate self-assessment allows an individual to become aware of their individual limitations and strengths. One must be willing to receive new perspectives and feedback about oneself in order to reach a higher level of emotional competency. A person who is involved in an accurate self-assessment will be motivated by the constant learning process that self-development truly is. An individual in the process of an accurate self-assessment will be able clearly visualize the areas that need further develop for positive personal change. An individual who is competent in accurate self-assessment is able to have a sense of humor about their personality and or actions. An individual must be willing to laugh at his or her own faults or mistakes. Just remember that we are all only human. Another skill an individual will possess is the ability to truly understand their individual limitations and strengths. Someone who is competent in accurate self-awareness is also able to receive feedback. Many of us crumble under negative feedback but it is important to take negative feedback and essentially turn this negative into a positive. This will allow an individual to lead a more positive and successful life. There are two steps that an individual can take when working on developing an accurate self-assessment. When an individual is searching for an accurate self-assessment, the individual may want to ask for feedback from people that the individual is comfortable with. Ask for comments about specific behaviors and actions. This allows an individual to realize their personal emotions that affect their strengths and limitations. In addition, an individual should make a personal inventory of their individual strengths. After this list is made then compare the strengths with lists that others have made. This allows for a new perspective and self-assessment. Remember that it is always a good thing to receive a second opinion. Usually, a second opinion allows us to step back from ourselves and revaluate a situation. First, you must pass the first step.
