Probing into Agoraphobia – Inside the Mind

We feel that when a person has an understanding of their condition it helps them to accept the anxiety disorder and move to find a cure through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Agoraphobia is the fear of open spaces, an anxiety disorder that is characterized by an irrational fear that may have developed early on in one’s childhood. Often the person with Agoraphobia may fear going into public places or open spaces. The fear causes the person to express anxiety and even panic attacks when the fear becomes overwhelming.

Every year, around 2% of the population of men and 4% of women are diagnosed with Agoraphobia. According to medical experts, Agoraphobia usually develops early on in life. It is unlikely a person will develop this anxiety disorder after age 40.

Agoraphobia in nonprofessional terms means “fear of the marketplace”. The term graphically describes a person feeling trapped without a means of escape, particularly in busy places when anxiety becomes overwhelming.

People with Agoraphobia may experience extreme anxiety when standing in line at shopping malls, banks, theatres, and so forth. They may also find it difficult to travel via airplane or on a bus. These people feel overwhelmed in typical classrooms.

Most people will develop Agoraphobia while experiencing anxiety in one of the above situations. Not everyone develops panic attacks from agoraphobia. Panic attacks may never occur, or they may develop later on. The anxiety disorder known as Agoraphobia hinders a person from succeeding in daily chores, and in some cases, one may be completely confined to their home.

Medical Therapy

According to medical experts, when Agoraphobia is not treated, it may worsen or diminish and even vanish later. Exposure therapy is one of the best therapys to help a person overcome his or her Agoraphobia because the person is repeatedly exposed to anxiety-provoking situations. To prepare you,, you will be encountering some exposure therapy techniques. Around 90% of the people who perform this type of therapy have successfully overcome Agoraphobia.

Some people with Agoraphobia suffer from deep depression. If you experience this problem, consult your doctor immediately. Your doctor may need to prescribe you an antidepressant medication to help you get through these symptoms effectively. Shyness is also commonly noted in people who suffer from Agoraphobia.
