About Me

I am an experienced cognitive therapist, who works especially with children and families.

If you’re a child or young person who finds life worrying please reach out .
You are not alone.
Just lately many children have become anxious about becoming ill. The recent life changes we all experience because of Covid 19 have made home, school, and our friendships different.
When we go out to the park, to school, and to see friends . There are new rules that are puzzling and hard to remember all the time. We have to stay a distance away from friends, wear a mask, be careful where we walk, who we touch, and wash all the time.
We worry about getting sick. About our family members getting sick. Maybe a family member has been sick. This can be scary.
We see news about illness on TV and because we care about those people we love it’s hard to manage our worry. We sometimes find it hard to sleep, we have bad dreams, out school work is not so good as it was, we get cross and fed up.
Because we love our family, parents, grannies and grandpa. It’s normal to be concerned.
My job is to help children who have been finding life harder. I help them to learn new skills to manage worries.
If you need help with your anxiety and worries , that’s just fine . We can have a short friendly chat and see what might help. Just ask Mum or Dad to call and we can make a plan.
The first 30 minutes of the chat will be free , you don’t have to talk, we can make pictures together if that’s easier.

I work with individuals, and couples.
I was educated and have earned both a Masters degree and a Post Graduate Diploma in Art as well as in Cognitive Therapy.
I am a Diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy
I am familiar with the norms and values of African, Asian, & English culture as experienced and practiced working with individuals and families. I am knowledgeable about therapeutic practices, and bring a full range of professional skills to treatment.
I have worked with children and adolescents and with families in conflict, training others in Child Inclusive Primary Dispute Resolution. . I work with anger PTSD and trauma issues, and use CBT with justice involved clients.

I have published professionally in journals, and most recently written a chapter in a book published by Routledge Press in 2016. My latest chapter ( published in 2031) is about working with a young person who is anxious.

These are my therapeutic values and approach:

I emphasise collaboration and trust. I’m committed to working with families as well as individuals.
I encourage hope, growth, and constructive change.
I am open, flexible, and experienced; I respect and am accustomed to working with cultural difference, and in full collaboration with clients.
I use methods to suit each person within each therapeutic relationship, because each individual is important and unique: I work with clients to help them to clarify and establish their own personal goals, and to decide on their priorities in therapy with me.
I believe that each of us has strengths and values that inform our lives, and shape our ideals and relationships.
I expect people to feel empowered and grow in their own personal experience as treatment progresses. I support each client in his or her quest to become more self aware.
I work with anxiety disorders and with depression; I support individuals when they are struggling with stress, panic, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, trauma, and OCD.

As a qualified art & Cognitive therapist, I use imagery techniques together with mindfulness practice to encourage self acceptance when dealing with the fears, dreams, and nightmares that often accompany depression and anxiety.

Rating: [5 out of 5 stars!]

"I began therapy with Gillian at a time when I was completely overwhelmed and felt lost. Apart from being an exceptionally anxious person I was experiencing many problems in my life, at home and with family as well as with work & my studies.
I found Gillian not only helped me through using cognitive therapy, she was a warm and caring person who gave me hope. Her guidance helped me to became a stronger person.

I still struggle today, however have I learned, with her skills & help to be more confident and together she gradually taught me to developed new skills. So that I understand how to manage and deal with my anxiety and am better able to cope.

Gillian is always there when needed, with words of reassurance and is truly an exceptional therapist and person.
No one has cared and given me hope in this way. I believe that this process of her creating a safe space and using CBT has helped me change my anxious, negative thoughts and beliefs about myself.
What seems most important is that first she believed I could get well. She stood behind me and supported me through the process.
I can’t more highly recommend her.

With gratitude…

"I have known GILLIAN SOLOMON for over 2 decades both in the capacity of a colleague as well as a consultant to her regarding cases.

During this time she has tirelessly engaged in upskilling herself in the field of psychotherapy both in South Africa and in the United Kingdom receiving qualifications that speak to her significant skill, knowledge and experience.

As a clinician she is deeply compassionate and sensitive towards those with whom she consults. She reflects deeply about her work and her expertise with both individuals and couples is proven. She is widely read, flexible, adaptive and up to date with current therapeutic discourse both in thought and practice.

sincerely,

"Our family was experiencing a metamorphosis. We were battling with change on a scale that we were not able to manage by ourselves. She helped us find perspective in communicating more effectively between ourselves. She facilitated honest conversation with us. She has managed to comfortably bridge the divide between herself and us as parents, as well as the divide between herself and the younger family members. We spoke and she listened. We could then be open to change. We have found comfort in her intelligent, direct, yet caring guidance."

"Gillian has volunteered as a moderator in the CBT Nest community for several years now, and has contributed endless wisdom and valuable insight to other therapists. Her professional expertise is often backed up by her readily cited professional literature, and she is very cognizant of professional ethics and obligations. She has been a role model as well as a mentor for others in our community, and I look forward to her future contributions!"
