Dr. Kate Lieberman,
I am a clinical psychologist licensed in the state of Virginia. I have been fortunate to have had a variety of clinical experiences in which I have been exposed to diverse clients in a range of settings. I am currently seeking to expand my practice and availability to individuals in need of psychological services, who may not be able or willing to obtain face-to-face treatment.
In my current clinical work, I incorporate digital modalities, at times as adjuncts to in-person interventions, and occasionally as the primary mode of treatment. I have found that clients highly benefit from having access to ongoing care via telephone, video, and text message when they are unable to come in for physical appointments (for instance due to scheduling issues or illness). I have utilized these modalities with clients with a variety of presenting problems, including: mood and anxiety disorders, emotional and behavioral regulation difficulties, family conflict, school-related difficulties, trauma and violence exposure, social skills deficits, LGBTQ-related concerns, and general life transitions.
I have developed the skills necessary to maintain rapport and protect clients’ privacy while working via telephone, email, text message, and video chat. I am up to date and aware of applicable laws, as well as the APA’s code of ethics for psychologists. In the current global climate, in which individuals are faced with mounting uncertainty about the future, I feel duty-bound to offer my professional expertise.
With respect to how I approach therapy, I strive to be truly collaborative with my clients. I believe that while I do have expertise with respect to psychological theories and therapeutic techniques, each individual is the expert with respect to his/ her/ their life and experiences. I work with a client to identify his/ her/ their goals for treatment, sources of support or resilience, as well as potential roadblocks or obstacles. I strive to understand an individual in the context of his/ her/ their history (e.g., life experiences), culture, family, and community systems. I recognize that I am limited at times by my own background and potential biases; I strive to identify and acknowledge these and seek to combat them through honest communication and continuing education. I am trained in a variety of different therapeutic techniques, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing, and I am pursuing training in internal family systems therapy. I am able to provide concrete suggestions for coping skills for those who want them, and I am also able to take a less structured approach if appropriate.
