Dr. Uma Subbiah,
My name is Uma Subbiah,Psy.D. and I am. a licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years of experience providing psychotherapy to a diverse group of individuals. I will provide a summary of my education and work background as well as my treatment approach with my clients.
I completed my B.A. in Psychology and Zoology at Miami University. I focused on both hard science classes such as Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiology along with basic and advanced Psychology classes with emphasis on Cognitive Behavioral Approaches to treatment particularly for underserved populations such as minorities.
I obtained my Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from New York University. I completed research on the psychological impact on individuals diagnosed with AIDS. I spent time meeting and interviewing patients with early to advanced AIDS to assess their mental status, treatment compliance, and support system and how this connected to their prognosis.
I completed my Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology at Wright State University where I received my Psy.D. In 1997. I completed trainings in psychological assessment, child therapy, work with gifted children, and family and couples counseling, and individual therapy for individuals in the community. I completed my Pre-Doctoral Internship at the Cleveland VA Medical Center where I completed three rotations during the year of training. The first rotation was in the Mood Disorders Clinic where I treated veterans diagnosed with mood disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, along with anxiety disorders. Some of these patients were see on the inpatient unit and others as outpatients. My second rotation was providing individual and group treatment to veterans attending an inpatient PTSD program. Finally, my last rotation was assessing patients presenting for inpatient substance abuse treatment.
After completing my degree, I worked as a clinical psychologist in a community mental health center in Ohio where I provided individual, group, marital, family, and child therapy to a very diverse group of patients in a rural setting. I also administered psychological testing for children to assess IQ, ADHD, and learning problems.
I then moved to Nashville, TN where I was Clinical Director of a large private group mental health practice. In addition to administrative duties for the practice, I also provided individual, group, family, and couples counseling to adults, adolescents and children. I also provided pre- and post-op treatment for patients undergoing bariatric surgery and assisting in education and treatment of eating disorders.
For the past 11 years, I have been working as a clinical psychologist at the Providence VA Medical Center where I provide individual, group and couples counseling for veterans with a variety of mental health disorders including PTSD, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, panic disorder, insomnia, smoking cessation, and substance abuse treatment.
My theoretical approach is primarily Cognitive-Behavioral treatment. I have received formalized training in CBT for treatment of depression and anxiety. I have also had training in EMDR and Cognitive Processing Treatment for PTSD. I emphasize establishing a therapeutic alliance with my patients and working together to establish goals for treatment. My goal is to assist the patient to realize their potential, to find satisfaction and joy both individually and in their relationships, and to heal from their past traumas.
