I earned a Ph.D. in Counseling from the University of New Orleans in New Orleans, LA in 2005. I am an LPC-Supervisor and privileged by the LPC Board of Examiners in the practice of telehealth. Additionally, I am a Registered Sandplay Practitioner (RSP) with the Sandplay Therapists of America. I have completed post-graduate training in Jungian psychology, including the child analyatic intensive at the Jungian Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. I have underdone years of my own personal process with Dallas-based Jungian analyst, Jackie Kelly. I have been (a) the author of over 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals, including authoring 6 books in child and adolescent psychotherapy, (b) featured in 4 professionally produced DVDs by Alexander Street Press in child and adolescent psychology, and (c) the invited keynote speaker at 62+ mental health conferences in the US and internationally since 2013.
I formerly served as a tenured associate professor in the College of Education at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN (ranked by US News and World Report as #1 College of Education in the US in 2015/2016), and a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education [ranked by US News and World Report as #1 College of Education (2013) in the US] in Baltimore, MD (2005-2018). I have appeared as an expert discussing the effects of natural disasters on children and families on the cable news network CNN, including being featured in the televised documentary, “Children of the Storm.” I have maintained a private practice in child and family psychotherapy since 2005.
I view counseling as a collaborative process where the client and the counselor come to understand and trust one another, work as a team to explore and define problems, develop goals, draw upon strengths, increase awareness, and develop coping strategies for improved communication toward the development and maintenance of prosocial relationships. My primary emphasis is counseling children ages 4-17, parents, and their families. I also see young adults 18-25. I am a play therapist and use expressive art therapy from a psychodynamic/Jungian approach. I have authored books on both of these topics previously. I have advanced training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and I use CBT regularly in my sessions. I have expertise in evidence-based practice. I have post-graduate training and/or certifications in providing four of the most used evidence-based dyadic psychotherapies for young children: Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and Child Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT). These therapies focus on strengthening the child-parent relationship and have demonstrated efficacy in leading to positive behavioral changes and improved parent–child interactions. I have integrated evidence-based practice into my 18 years as a clinician, as well as infused it throughout graduate courses in child psychotherapy as the gold standard of care when treating traumatized children. I have also co-authored and/or participated in multiple grant projects, some of which were federally funded, that involved the use of evidence-based practice and action research to assess psychological outcomes in children and teens treated for trauma. Additionally, I counsel couples and parents through family therapy.
