I am very solution focused so I like to find out right away what is causing the client's distress, the desired outcome regarding therapy and then together we collaborate on the steps required while identifying any barriers along the way.
My two favorite therapeutic interventions are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness.
CBT teaches you about your nervous system and mindfulness teaches you how to regulate a dysregulated nervous system.
I also find the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) questionaire very helpful to assess the stress your nervous system endured while it was developing and a modified Eye Movement Densensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) technique to discharge energy off of the nervous system.
Being a therapist is my second career, my first career was as a firefighter/EMT so I adopt many things from the medical model/emergency medicine, primarily, the strong belief in the body's ability to heal. The brain is very resilient and is capable of building new neural pathways that result in new behaviors.
I spend 18 years helping people with their physicals wounds and now I want to hel people with their emotional wounds.
