I collaborate with clients to formulate goals and ways to make progress towards meeting those goals. We will choose objectives that clients are willing and able to implement. I primarily use CBT. My approach is collaborative. If a client is having trouble following through on things, I will gently explore with them what's getting in the way and then come alongside them to help them reach their goals. I like to use humor when it's appropriate. Mainly, I believe that the therapeutic alliance is the best way to help clients. When they feel like they can trust me and relate to me, then they will feel safe and hopefully motivated to do the work.
I work a lot with clients who have anxiety. I came into that specialty quite by accident, as I ended up doing some of my practicum with a psychologist who specialized in anxiety. He had me read several books and work with clients in vivo.
Another area of interest and experience is with grief. I have personal experience with different types of losses and spent a couple of years volunteering at a grief center, working with groups experiencing different categories of losses and also meeting with individuals who needed further support for their grief.
All in all, I truly enjoy bringing my skills and experience into the process, knowing that I am providing a valuable service to those who reach out for help with their mental health.
