As a clinical mental health therapist, I want to offer therapy to patients who are struggling with meeting life challenges whether it’s because of depression, anxiety, relationships, family dynamics, job pressures or many other problematic variables in life. Patients usually know what they want when they come in to therapy and as I collaborate with them, I will better understand how to help them, understand, define, and refine their goal to a simple statement and then to be developed into objectives and interventions that we can collaborate on together to reach their goal. I realize that first of all, I must be intuitive and sensitive to the clients personality in order to connect with the patient and build rapport with them so that they will be open and willing to dig deep into whatever lies underneath the presenting problem that is keeping them from reaching their goal. There is nothing more fulfilling and rewarding than seeing a patient begin to understand those mental or emotional problems that are holding them back. Then as the patient reaches forward, learns, engages, and practices new skills and their goal is achieved, my (the therapist) reward is realized. Whether through DBT, CBT, REBT, family dynamics, relationship skills, communication skills, intimacy skills, anger, management skills, spiritual skills (prayer, meditation, or music) or many other skills a therapist may use, the ultimate fulfillment for the therapist is that the patient’s goal(s) is/are achieved.
