Overcome Your Agoraphobia with Online Therapy

Category: Agoraphobia Online Therapy | Last updated: February 1st, 2022 | Reviewed and approved by:

Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by irrational fears of public or open spaces. A person suffering from agoraphobia usually has previously had a panic attack in public and, therefore, avoids similar places or situations due to the fear of re-experiencing it.

Common places that are avoided are places that are difficult to easily escape like cinemas, churches, stores and traveling publicly by bus, train or airplane. If you avoid public situations like this due to the fear of having a panic attack and sometimes even isolate yourself at home, you might be suffering from agoraphobia.

If this sounds like you, please know you are not stuck; there are treatments that can help you. Our therapy for agoraphobia is based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on the negative thinking patterns and behaviors that contribute to your fear of having a panic attack and lead to avoidance. With the help of your therapist, you will slowly be exposed to real-life situations that cause your fear of a panic attack. While this may sound scary, it will be safe and will eventually help you overcome your fears. You will learn how to control your anxiety and to look at your fears in a more realistic light. As you progress through the treatment, the thought or experience of panic will become less petrifying. Eventually you will be able to cope with previously fearful situations so you can take control of your life again.

"Karon Hopkins has done wonders in helping me see things in a different light. The worksheets provided by the site have also helped me to understand what is going on inside my head. I still have a ways to go, but I am feeling like there is hope now."

"The sessions have been a great help in building conversation skills and understanding. Also, helping us to understand how are vastly different backgrounds have led to misunderstandings and how to overcome these problems"

"I am very early into the process, but so far, there's an abundance of resources and supporting tools. I was also able to find a therapist, Sarah, who has a schedule that aligns with mine. Based on our first session today, I can see that she approaches her clients with openness and curiosity and she listens mindfully. She offers perceptive reflections and affirms the journey. I will continue the process and trust that all of the above will be helpful."

"We started using online-therapy.com for the couples therapy and it's really great so far. I like that it contains a video course, that you can do by yourself with feedback from the therapist, additional to the sessions. We prefer the video sessions, compared to chat sessions. It's also quite helpful to be able to send messages in between session to your therapist. That way you can summarise before a meeting of what happened and use the time effectively.

A little downside seems to be so far, that you can only book one lesson per week, so if you had to reschedule due to an urgent thing, make sure you have one session per week. Otherwise you might lose out on that, it's not possible to do two sessions in one week, even if you didn't have one in the previous week!
